Ministry Highlight:
Journey to Bethlehem is
a Christmas production that has been going on at the Cicero Seventh-day Adventist Church for more than 15 years. It has an interactive Jerusalem village with 8-10 merchants. As the journey progresses, participants will view a total of 12 stations with live actors. A Christmas production such as this is a gift to the surrounding community, and over the years has seen thousands of visitors. You will receive a glimpse into why this ministry is important, and a guide to help implement it into your own church community.
Joe Reeves and his friends launched the Bridge Young Adult Ministry to build the faith of young adults and unify them for evangelism around the Detroit area. Since then him and his wife Ruthie have moved to Berrien Springs, where he currently serves as youth pastor at Village Church. In 2015 he launched the first Extreme Bible Workout trip for teens looking for adventure and a raw encounter with Jesus. He also serves as president of new Lake Union iShare – a ministry designed to harness the energy of young people for local church evangelism.
Ministry Highlight:
How did one young adult's innovative idea explode into a world-wide evangelism tool selling in the millions?
Scott Schalk has been involved in youth ministries as a lay person.  He ran the Pioneer Memorial Church Flag Camp for over 10 years.  This summer camp ran for eight weeks with over 100 kids attending every day.  In addition, he has been conducting Flag Camp mission trips for over 15 years to places such as Honduras, Romania, Slovakia,  and Republic of Georgia.
Ministry Highlight:
FLAG Camp stands for Fun Learning About God, targets kids ages 5-13 and can be a self-sufficient ministry. Ministerial Directors

This congress is so much more than an event. It is designed to have an impact in your local church through you. One of the ways we will support you is by connecting you with Conference Youth Directors and Ministerial Directors, who will share their insight with you so that you can establish a successful ministry at your local church.
We met our Youth Directors a few weeks ago. Meet the Ministerial Directors now...
John Grys
Illinois Conference Ministerial Director

He has a heart for the generations of our church and to see leaders grow in their capacity and competency to lead. John is originally from Chicago, hailing from North Shore SDA School and a graduate of Broadview Academy. Beyond serving here locally, John serves as an adjunct professor for the Christian Ministry Department in the Seminary at Andrews University, where he teaches graduate level leadership courses. "It is a joy to see our younger generations sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to discover congregations who have a heart and passion for our young people,” he writes.
Steven Poenitz
Indiana Conference President

Beginning ministry in 1974 Steven Poenitz has worked as pastor in several state fields, and most recently (2008) ministerial secretary and president (2015 forward) in the Indiana Conference. He enjoys engaging with people and networking with them to build relationships for empowering ministry. He and his wife Erney have been married for 31 years and enjoy the company of their harrier puppy dog, Happy.
Michael Horton
Lake Region Conference Ministerial Director

Pastor Michael Horton is married to Dr. Ruth Horton of Lake Union Conference. They have 3 sons, Michael, Elijah, and Isaiah.  He loves people, and enjoys and is excited to hear the thoughts, views, and visions of youth and young adults. He believes everyone has a story to tell.
He also loves the Bible and history, and is an avid reader in many fields.  Righteousness by faith, the prophetic scriptures of Daniel and Revelation, and understanding God’s movements in history are of special interest to him. Believing we should stay abreast of current events to understand the signs of the times, he reads the New York Times everyday.  He holds degrees from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the SDA Theological Seminary at Andrews University.
Evangelistically he focuses on reaching the secular mind in the 21st Century with the everlasting gospel. Pastor Horton believes as the Apostle Paul wrote, “Christ is ALL!”
