June 2019

With April and May typically filled with competitions and award announcements, we had quite a few opportunities for PBNY awardees to make us proud. You can read more about the teams and their accomplishments below, but I would like to take a moment to congratulate all of our teams for their hard work in applying for and participating in programs that often run simultaneously. All of the entrepreneurs we work with are a fount of energy, so I am always impressed by their ability to take advantage of the many opportunities that the cleantech ecosystem in New York State affords them. Kudos!

As we move into the quieter summer months, we are starting to work more closely with our new Cycle 6 teams. All of the teams have been successfully paired with a NYSERDA Entrepreneur-in-Residence and have begun to develop detailed project plans. These plans will have to be approved by our Review Committee which meets quarterly with all of the teams before the teams can earn their next tranche of funding. With the first review happening at the end of June, teams are working diligently to prepare. We look forward to continuing to help them progress toward commercialization.

Blue Instrument
Yi Yang pitched Blue Instrument at the NYU Stern New Venture Competition. Participating in the Technology Ventures track, Yi discussed how Blue Instrument prevents catastrophic wind turbine failure using their fiber-optic system that detects abnormalities in real-time. The judges were impressed enough to award them 2nd place and a $40,000 award. Congratulations to the team!
Calling all experts in chemical or electrochemical engineering! Cycle 6 awardee Sunthetics is looking for a mentor with technical expertise to help them think through how to build and scale their technology which can manufacture the key intermediate of Nylon 6,6 using renewable electricity while also reducing raw material and energy usage by up to 50% and manufacturing costs by up to 30%. If you or someone you know is interested in helping out this wonderful team, please hit reply on this email or reach out to Julia Byrd (
Young Lee of AdvanceH20 has made it to the semifinals of the GIST Catalyst competition which is part of the 2019 Global Entrepreneurship Summit. Their submission video does a great job outlining how their technology can help wastewater treatment plant operators better understand what is happening in their reactors and therefore optimize them to increase capacity while decreasing energy usage and operational costs.
QuatCare, a new Cycle 6 awardee, was recently accepted into Cleantech Open, which is the longest-running cleantech accelerator in the country. The team is also working with GM and Nissan on two pilots to prove the efficacy of the QuatCare water treatment technology in preventing bacterial growth in the paint-spraying systems which currently consume more than 9 billion gallons of water per year across the entire auto industry.
Shrish Patel recently pitched SolarClear at the New York State Business Plan Competition where he won 3rd place in the Energy & Environment track. Competing against the top teams selected during the regional competitions earlier in the year, SolarClear was up against the best of the best. They were able to get into the winner's circle with a compelling presentation on how their active solar cleaning system can make solar systems more efficient while reducing labor costs associated with panel cleaning.
Our new Cycle 6 awardee EINO is looking for some talent to join their growing startup. They have two open positions for a data scientist and a software product developer, so consider applying yourself or forwarding this to anyone who might be interested in working for an exciting new startup that has a pilot with a major telecom operator!
