Welcome to the Alaska Men Choose Respect Newsletter for Winter 2015-2016! This newsletter will keep you updated about the many AMCR related events, volunteer opportunities, and mini-grant opportunities happening across Alaska. More specifically, this newsletter hopes to help men become a part of the statewide movement of men promoting respect.
This quarter we are highlighting Kodiak for their work with COMPASS. With much help from the Kodiak Area Native Association (KANA) COMPASS is being utilized throughout Kodiak Island. So far they have held sessions with students in Port Lions, Ouzinke, Akhiok, and Old Harbor.

The activity that has been the fan favorite so far is "Positive Focus". Positive Focus is in the Respect for Others section. The students sit in a circle. They then take turns standing at the center of the circle while the students on the outside of the circle say one thing they like or appreciate about the person in the middle.

In the future the Kodiak mentors are looking forward to incorporating COMPASS activities into the installation of a green house in Akhiok. Kodiak is also planning to host their 2nd Annual COMPASS training in August.
ANDVSA will be hosting a COMPASS training in Dillingham March 16-18
COMPASS: A Guide for Men is a resource for adult male mentors who work with young Alaskan men aged 12 to 18. COMPASS presents mentors with opportunities and activities that are designed to support young men as they explore and identify their values, goals and unique identities. The activities, teachable moments and discussions described in the guide create a safe atmosphere for men and boys to learn about and practice healthy lifestyles. In addition, these strategies are designed to be easily incorporated into the day-to-day interactions that already exist between mentors and youth like team sports, camping, hiking, fishing, hunting, etc. Ultimately the guide promotes meaningful conversations between men and male youth that promote healthy identities, build positive relationships, and strengthen safe and violence-free communities.

COMPASS goes to Metlakatla
COMPASS went to Metlakatla in October. We trained a few new mentors and got to experience the beauty of Metlakatla by incorporating a short canoe trip in the Na'haaygm Lagyigyedm or Spirit of our Ancestors. Our trainer Gene also had the opportunity to work with the students in the elementary and middle schools. He even broke out his Seahawk regalia which was met with great enthusiasm by the students. He spoke to them about leadership, respect, and the importance of their stories.
If you have any male engagement related events, trainings, or volunteer opportunities that you’d like to see featured in the newsletter please send them to with the subject heading “Newsletter”. If you have or are currently working on an Alaska Men Choose Respect related project in your community we’d love to write about it as well. Please email us using the subject heading “AMCR Community Spotlight”.
