In the Loop: Need a gift for a homesick Houstonian-in-exile? A T-shirt with this design will make them laugh — and if people in Chicago or L.A. or wherever don't get it, all the better. Designed by James Glassman, who offers other excellent Hou-centric designs in the Houstorian shop.

URBAN ALMANAC: CHINESE TALLOW TREE

Once you learn to recognize Chinese tallow trees (Triadica sebifera), they piss you off. Hideously invasive in east Texas, they’ve swallowed large tracts of neglected land between Houston and Galveston, creating one-species forests that don’t support birds, butterflies or other wildlife.

This time of year, their leaves turn red and gold. They’re gorgeous. Don’t trust them.
