HPC Upgrades Coming

We are about to embark on a major upgrade for our High Performance and High Throughput compute clusters.  Highlights include:
  • New HPC nodes
  • New Condor nodes
  • Improved login node clusters
  • New InfiniBand FDR Fabric
  • New TotalView Debugger software
We will be performing these upgrades over several maintenance periods: Aug. 15 and 18 and Sept. 1-8.

RCC is excited to provide these upgrades, and we will be keeping all our users appraised of the progress as it occurs.

Owen Mundy Featured in the Atlantic Magazine

Florida State Art Department faculty and data enthusiast Owen Mundy recently made headlines in The New York Times, USA Today, The Atlantic and around the globe because he knows where your cat lives ... and he used the HPC to help find out.

Owen has created an algorithm to geographically map the location of one million cats around the world based on metadata included with Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook posts.  He uses the HPC and Spear Cluster to parse through millions of images.

New Software: deal.II

deal.II is a C++ finite element software library supporting the creation of finite element codes and an open community of users and developers.  It uses state-of-the-art programming techniques to offer developers and scientists a modern interface to complex data structures and algorithms.

RCC users can now use the deal.II libraries when compiling software on the HPC.

Research: Studying Motor Speech Disorders

Dysarthria is a motor speech disorder that impacts people with neurological impairments and disorders, including ALS, Parkinson's disease, or stroke.

Dr. Kaitlin Lansford at the Florida State School of Communication Science and Disorders has teamed up with students in the RCC to develop an online study with the ultimate goal of improving communication between caregivers and dysarthric patients.
