Dear <<First Name>>!

While I (Steve) am on sabbatical through September, let me introduce this month’s guest writer, Jadyn Van Der Horn of Youth with a Mission (YWAM) serving here in San Francisco’s Tenderloin (she is pictured in the middle). I invited her to share a testimony of our coaching relationship and its impact on her.

Hi, my name is Jadyn Van Der Horn of YWAM in downtown San Francisco. I met Steve when he taught in my Discipleship Training School (DTS). During DTS, God confirmed my passion for discipleship in community, leading me to join YWAM staff full time. To do that, I’ve begun the process of raising financial support, trusting that God would raise up people to join in the work we at YWAM do in the Tenderloin. I underestimated how difficult the process would be and found myself tired and stuck. My ministry leader recommended I reach out to Steve, who has coached other YWAM staff in the past.

As I began meeting with Steve, he really met me where I was at. Steve would provide reading materials including his own new support-raising book addressing why we raise support, the heart work that happens before the actual ask, and structure that would help guide the process. We discussed personal hindrances in the way of effective and efficient support raising. In addition to our weekly one-hour sessions, I would have specific things to work on as homework for our next one. Steve was always encouraging and reminding me of my identity and value through Christ passed what I could be doing better or different in our sessions.

The reading materials we went through together helped me realize I wasn’t alone and what I was feeling was valid. Steve has been great at challenging me to step out of my comfort zone and to try things that I wouldn’t have considered. He has helped me to see ways that I can bring the Tenderloin and the impact its had on me to others. Raising financial support has become less about me and more about what God is doing in our neighborhood and I am honored to have the opportunity to include others in that work.

This letter is dated 8/29/21, but I wrote this in late June right after my last coaching appointment with Jadyn. Our next one won't be until the Fall.  I encouraged her to email me with her progress even though I won’t be reading nor responding to her emails until October. Join me in praying for her, and for the others we’ve coached and equipped.  I anticipate coming back in Oct and witnessing what the Lord has done. My family and Kingdom Rice has invested a lot of prayer, time, and finances into YWAM and Jadyn is part of that family. If you want to hear about her ministry in San Francisco’s Tenderloin, please contact her at jadyn@ywamsanfrancisco.org.

Though I am “unplugged,” we worship a God who neither sleeps nor slumbers. By the time you read this, I will be entering my last month of sabbatical where I’ll be turning my focus towards integrating new rhythms into my life and into Kingdom Rice.  Peace and grace!    Love Steve
