Dear <<First Name>>!

August 7, 2022

I am excited to introduce two new Kingdom Rice board members!

Welcome Felicia Larson to the Kingdom Rice board! She entered the board discernment process in May, filled out an application centered around our vision and mission, interviewed with me, interviewed with retired board member Nate Lee, participated in two programs, and attended a board meeting. I appreciated seeing her own process that included prayer and consultation with her spiritual director. She took the process seriously and did not rush it. In the end, both our respective processes converged and she signed our “faith commitment” form to serve a two year minimum.

What really impresses me about Felicia is how she clearly puts people before programs and even her own credentials. For example, when she drove up 40 miles in May to volunteer with KR’s work with BIPOC (Black, indigenous, people of color) leaders, I knew she had a lot to give as a diversity expert who helped edit Daniel Hill’s “White Awake” book. I knew she was a seasoned articulator of these concepts as a transformational leadership seminary instructor. But her credentials took a back seat to her ministry for those BIPOC leaders most struggling to walk on San Francisco’s hills. I witnessed her miss much of our program to befriend those who needed extra support.  Because of Felicia, others were able to participate and engage. That spoke volumes to me and to those leaders who received her ministry. In the weeks that followed, I saw these kinds of qualities repeatedly come to surface.

Welcome John Yoon to the Kingdom Rice board! John writes, “Steve’s influence on my life began over 25 years ago when he first encouraged me to move beyond a "secular" work vs "ministry" dichotomy, and view all of my work as a ministry unto the Lord.”

Fast forward a quarter century, and we find John demonstrating this holistic approach to work in his role as pastor of Hyde Park Church in Chicago and as an academic hospitalist and medical educator at the University of Chicago Department of Medicine. John says “I invited Steve to speak in my course at the University of Chicago. It was clear that Steve's presentation had made a lasting impression… Indeed, the very existence of this kind of course at a secular academic institution was the fruit of Steve's own ministry to me back in college.”

After going through the same process as Felicia, filling out our application, interviewing with me and board member Andy Chu, he joined our board. Besides his qualifications and our long-standing relationship, I co-led two cohorts with John among his church leadership. With KR’s cohort and John’s vision working together, we experienced unexpected and unprecedented inter-generation reconciliation that continues to bear fruit today. One of John’s roles on the board will be to bring even greater effectiveness to cohorts we’ve run in churches and mission organizations.

I invited Felicia and John and other prospective board members to consider joining the board because of who they are and how they steward their many gifts for the Kingdom (see “who we are” on the website to get to know our board more). The whole process of inviting people to the board took much prayer, research, thought and planning. Visit our blog by clicking here to read more about the process (e.g. why I don’t make financial giving a board requirement, how I honor the deep work of retired board members which includes insights, processes, and even capturing my leadership quirks!)

Including myself and Andy, there are four current members and we’re hoping the next few months will round out the board with additional voices. Members of the retired board now serve in other roles like interviews and teaching.  Thank you for your support and please do feel free to drop me a line by clicking here.

God bless you this month! — Steve Hong
