What’s been happening? Through the summer months Newtown Kindness has been busy with various projects and encouraged with opportunities that continue to arise. Let’s catch you up on some of the exciting developments.

Kindness Initiatives

In June Newtown Kindness had the privilege of providing a special playhouse for the Regional Hospice of Danbury. Families of patients and children participating in grief support are part of the daily scene at this wonderful facility. The dedication of the playhouse took place on July 7. Cynthia Roy, the President and CEO of the hospice wrote in a thank you letter, “We are so grateful for the time, funding, and heartfelt good wishes that went into the planning of this wonderful addition to our Center. You have done so much through your foundation to recognize kindness in others, and we are honored to be the beneficiary of this act of kindness.”

Charlotte's Litter

JoAnn Bacon traveled to Chicago in July for the annual Lutheran Comfort Dog Convention. She presented in two breakout sessions with a focused message on grieving in a public tragedy, the comfort that dogs can bring to grieving families and the wider community, and lastly she shared the special way the Bacon family chooses to honor Charlotte through Charlotte's Litter and the books Good Dogs, Great Listeners - The Story of Charlotte, Lily, and The Litter and The Dogs of Newtown. JoAnn was especially thankful that Renata Bowers was able to join her as a presenter. It was a wonderful couple of days to catch up with old friends and make new ones.

Acts of Kindness Awards

Now is the time to begin thinking again of nominating someone or submitting your own entry for our next Charlotte Bacon Acts of Kindness Awards Program. Last years’ entries were awesome and it was such a thrill to be able to recognize our 11 finalists. However, we know that there are many more children and young people out there doing amazing things and we want to include them for consideration in next year’s award program. Award winners receive a significant financial grant for their charity of choice along with a trophy and certificate of recognition.

The Charlotte Bacon Act of Kindness Awards Program is designed to promote, recognize and reward children to “think kindly and act boldly” through acts of kindness. Nominations are accepted for children up to age 16 who have demonstrated kindness through some form of personal or community service; that is, a helpful project that has been considered worthy of recognition. All entries must be submitted by January 10, 2017 for consideration. Award finalists will be announced on February 22, 2017. Please spread the word to encourage nominations.
Charlotte’s Litter – New Grant Program

Charlotte's Litter is excited to announce the first round of financial grants to therapy dogs organizations that meet our mission and application criteria. Charlotte's Litter is dedicated to advocating and supporting therapy dogs in educational settings. The Bacon family has been a strong voice talking about the benefits and the care they received after the 12/14 tragedy. Please help us by spreading the word and forwarding this grant information to individuals and groups that work and volunteer in the therapy dog field. Through your help, we can reach more students!

The Charlotte’s Litter Therapy Dog Program advocates for therapy dog programs in educational settings and is committed to supporting organizations that provide these services. Charlotte’s Litter is currently in its first round of offering financial grants to organizations that meet the following criteria and guidelines. Charlotte’s Litter is a program of Newtown Kindness, Inc.
  • Purpose of grants: To increase the availability of qualified dog handlers, therapy dogs, and effective programs that utilize therapy dogs in educational settings. Newtown Labor Day Parade

On Monday September 5th, Newtown Kindness celebrated with the community as they held their 55th Annual Labor Day Parade.  Our Pink Hummer Truck and Trailer rolled down Main Street distributing 1000 free bottles of water and 4000 pieces of lifesaver candy.  Helping in the festivities was one of our very own Board Members dressed up as Goofy who also gave out several 6 foot bears to surprised children along the route.  We look forward to this event every year as we remind all of the power of kindness and boldness.

Newtown Kindness Boards Says Thanks

For all who have faithfully volunteered or served on the Board of Newtown Kindness we are deeply grateful. We especially want to express our heart-felt thanks to board member Ken Murdoch who is stepping down at this point. Due to his overwhelming work travel schedule with Save the Children, Ken feels the need to withdraw at his time. We want to salute him for his invaluable contribution to Newtown Kindness over these last three years.
