School's back in session!

The opposite sentiment of Alice Cooper's song "School's out for summer"! I hope you have adjusted to your fall routine. For me, it's always hard, I want summer to last just a wee bit longer. I took advantage of a warm weekend and spent time laying on the chaise lounge on my deck-- pretending I was on the beach in the Caribbean! Though, I enjoy all the seasons, I am always sad to see the end of summer.

The games we play.

My grand daughter is now three years old, how quickly time flies. She was just a babe a few eye blinks ago! I am now able to bring her to my home and we have our own special routine. She helps me with my composting, and she picks the cherry tomatoes I have been growing for her. She then says "Nana let's go to the playground", I am fortunate enough to live by Mary Woodward school, which has an excellent playground. After our time on the slides and swings, we come home to have a cup of tea. She drinks fennel tea while I have my English Breakfast tea. Then, it's time to play with play doh, we make cupcakes and ice-cream with very unusual flavors! I am constantly amazed by the minds of children, I enjoyed playing pretend with my children and now am enjoying repeating the rituals with Nina.

Recycle tip.

Most recyclers do not recycle bottle caps, that happens to be a ton of hard plastic that ends up in the landfill or in our oceans. I have found a local recycler here that will accept plastic and metal lids. You may want to check your local area to see who will take this hard plastic, for those of you in the Portland area here is the link to take your lids. http://www.farwestrecycling.com.

Meandering thoughts.

My friend Sharon and I went to the Quilt show last week, after years of not being able to walk very far, due to my painful knees, it was such a joy to meander and look at how far quilting has come. Though, I was impressed by the techniques of the new quilts, I didn't marvel at them the same way I marvel at a hand stitched postage stamp quilt which has been pieced by hand and then quilted by hand, like the quilts of days gone by. These new hi-tech quilts had intricate quilting patterns on them, which were achieved by a quilting machine. Call me old fashioned, I am in awe of women who pieced tiny pieces of fabric together to keep their families warm during harsh times, bravo to them, in my mind they elevated a simple covering into an art form. I didn't walk away thinking I want to go home and reproduce a quilt I had seen at the expo, my friend Sharon, felt the same way. We did enjoy each other's company and it was interesting to see how quilting has evolved, perhaps too much for my taste! Please drop me a line and let me know what's new in your corner of the world.

Halloween is just around the corner-- boo!

Here is your Feng Shui tip! Jade is a healing stone, it carries serene and calming energy and teaches acceptance. It helps a person become less critical of self and others!
This photograph is a blast from the past. Twenty years ago, Reina and I rafted the Colorado River at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. We are going to repeat that trip next June. We plan to reproduce this picture and compare. My eyebrows will definitely be thinner!
