Karl Lagerfeld once said, “Sweatpants are a sign of defeat”—and many other things that haven’t aged well. Since then, athleisure has become the most acceptable form of everyday wear, elevated over the years by streetwear trends and cool yoga brands. So it was only a matter of time before the trend was taken to the extreme and sweatsuits were welcomed as acceptable outdoor clothes, as well. Or perhaps it was the onset of winter that has convinced us all not to bother with getting dressed. With a sweatsuit, all you need to add is an over-the-top coat or statement accessory and you might look ridiculous enough to not be bothered on your laziest of days. If only Karl could see how chic a Chanel bag looks juxtaposed a cozy pair of sweats.
1. The Hungover Sweatsuit. When you know you won't be changing out of your oldest, comfiest sweats all day, top them off with your chunkiest boots and jewelry, considering you won't care what anyone thinks about you today, either.
2. The Coffee-Run Sweatsuit. Because you don't actually want to get dressed but you know there's a chance you'll see ten people you know at Alfreds—add your nicest bag and go.
3. The Travel Sweatsuit. Layer for the plane, train, or automobile in the fanciest version of sweats you can find (so you still stand a chance for a free upgrade).
5. The Post-Workout Sweatsuit. Bundle up after a workout (or telling yourself that you're on the way to one) in super-soft sweats and slides. Add a puffer if you have to face actual winter elements along the way.
