Full disclosure: I'm still learning how to dress for New York winters (and winters in general). I talk about being cold in this newsletter a lot because I always am, so my journey towards mastering the art of dressing warm and chic seems like something worth sharing, especially in the event that I ever figure it out. I'm always looking for lessons in layering, taking notes from the passersby bundled up in this ever-stylish city. While we all find inspiration in our feeds, I find the most practical outfits ideas in the real world, where really cold temperatures have to be endured for more than just an outfit pic. Here are a few ways the city has taught me to layer this winter.

The Leggings & Trousers.
First of all, do not make the mistake of wearing loose-fitting pants without a legging layered underneath. To avoid feeling bulky while layering up, pair the duo with a ribbed turtleneck and belted trench coat.
TRENCH Reformation, $268 TOP Ninety Percent, $49 TROUSERS Zara, $40 LEGGINGS Uniqlo Heattech, $15 SNEAKERS New Balance, $140 SUNGLASSES Le Specs, $79 EARRINGS Oak + Luna, $45 FACE MASK Girl of the Earth, $25-98
The Shirt, Shacket, & Aviator Jacket.
Bored of your sweater and sweatshirt rotation? Apparently, you can make button-ups and blouses work in the cold, too, by piling the right layers on top (and a thermal underneath, if you need). Wool shackets and shearling-lined coats are ideal options in this scenario.
COAT Stand Studio, $470 SHACKET Everlane, $78 SHIRT Onia, $135 LEGGINGS Vaara, $215 BAG Cuyana, $365 LOAFERS G.H. Bass, $110 EARRINGS Laura Lombardi, $70 FACE MASK ASTR The Label, $19 for 3
The Turtleneck, Crewneck, & Puffer.
Make use of all the new sweatshirts you’ve acquired over quarantine with my favorite of-the-moment combo: Layer a crewneck over a turtleneck and add a handful of necklaces (and a puffer, realistically) on top.
COAT Aritzia, $278 SWEATSHIRT Carhartt, $89 TURTLENECK Uniqlo Heattech, $15 JEANS Everlane, $78 SNEAKERS Vans, $55 NECKLACES Ana Luisa, $98 TOTE Baggu, $10 FACE MASK Baggu, $22 for 3
The Sweatshirt & Vest.
Vests? Absolutely coming back. With gorpcore going mainstream, expect utilitarian trends like these to continue all year. They'll give you a cool new way to wear all your quarantine sweatsuits to the grocery store, too.
VEST The Frankie Shop, $199 SWEATSHIRT Local European, $120 THERMAL Aritzia, $18 SWEATPANTS Local European, $110 BOOTS & Other Stories, $179 BEANIE Ganni, $95 NECKLACE Maison Irem, $154 FACE MASK Profound, $14
The Cami, Cardigan, & Coat.
When it comes to a girls' night or a date night in, not all layering pieces are equal. Swap your functional heattech layers for a semi-functional, totally flirty bodysuit, add a few cozy knit layers, then bundle up with all your winter accessories for an irresistibly cute look.
COAT Zara, $90 CARDIGAN Mango, $40 BODYSUIT Cami NYC, $98 LEGGINGS Mango, $35 BOOTS All Saints, $398 BEANIE Aritzia, $50 SCARF Uniqlo, $8 GLOVES Uniqlo, $8 FACE MASK Everlane, $25 for 5

Thanks for reading, it means the world.
