THE JEWELRY EDITION
BY LAUREN BLACK
One of the few ways I've been able to maintain a semblance of normalcy amidst the shutdown is by piling on my favorite jewelry pieces each morning. That simple moment gives me the familiar sense of being "ready" for the day, adding a boost of motivation to any sweatsuit that might try to convince me otherwise. Truthfully, I don't have a very robust jewelry collection, nor a very fine one, and I don't believe either is required to tap into the powerful sensation of feeling polished. But I do try to find a personal connection to the jewels I adorn myself with, whether they represent a milestone in life, a trait I admire about myself, or a brand that means something more to me. If you're in search of any of those, start with one of these beautiful small businesses.

The glossary.
Here's a quick cheat sheet to reference so you know exactly what you're paying for (or paying too much for) when it comes to jewelry.

$ GOLD-PLATED: Made with a thin layer of gold over base metal, like brass. Gold plated jewelry is inexpensive, but it will tarnish and rub off relatively quickly. Keep these pieces for going out, so you won't be heartbroken if something happens to them.

$$ GOLD VERMEIL: Made with a thicker layer of gold over sterling silver. Gold vermeil is still affordable, but can eventually rub off. Opt for gold vermeil for on-trend pieces you can wear all season long (but perhaps not long after).

$$$ GOLD-FILLED: Made with a thick layer of gold bonded to a base metal, meaning it doesn't tarnish or rub off but does require care. Build your everyday jewelry collection with gold-filled pieces.

$$$$ SOLID GOLD: Made with gold alloyed to a mixture of metals for durability. Sold gold jewelry is likely the most expensive option because its low maintenance and won't tarnish. Celebrate special occasions and accomplishments with solid-gold pieces to mix in with your other jewels.
