June is National Survivor Month -
Visit our facebook page and
tell us how you celebrate!

Dear AWFH members and friends,
June is the National Cancer Survivor Month and this year, it has a special meaning to me as it marked my 10th Anniversary since my diagnosis in June 2005!
Cancer is a life-changing event for most survivors and family members.  I am grateful that I lived through the ordeal with the support and love from my family and friends and I consider it a privilege to be able to work with fellow cancer survivors and their care givers.
Recently I had the opportunity to accompany a cancer survivors delegation from Japan on their learning tour in Boston.  We met with representatives from New England Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NECCS), Friends of Mel Foundation, Whitehead Institute, Japanese Bostonians Support Line; visited the AstraZeneca Hope Lodge and MGH Health Decision Sciences Center; and had a wonderful tour and lunch at the Boston Medical Center Cancer Center, led by Bob David, the Coordinator of Cancer Support Services.
It was both an exhilarating and humbling experience for me to see the great work these organizations are doing. We are proud to serve as the convener/connector to facilitate collaboration and share best practices on patient-centered care and support, and are open to suggestions on how we could improve our work and better communicate with our members.
Please take 5 minutes to complete a short key stakeholders survey.  We will reveal the result in our July e-newsletter and share it at our annual meeting on the evening of Monday, July 20 (mark this on your calendar!)
Enjoy the rest of the newsletter and share it with your network:-)

Meet... Liza Talusan!
Liza Talusan is a Pilipino woman who was born and raised in Boston, MA. At age 34, she was diagnosed with genetically positive BRCA gene and had a bilateral prophylactic mastectomy to reduce her risk of cancer. In January 2014, Liza removed her ovaries in order to reduce her risk of ovarian cancer. She volunteers her time with the Asian Breast Cancer Project; Facing our Risk of Cancer Empowered; Retinoblastoma New England; and Pink Pals, a support group for young breast cancer survivors.
Liza is a fun and bubbly educator (she is the Director of Intercultural Affairs at the Stonehill College). However, she would secretly give it all up to be a touring singer and guitar player in a band! She is the mother of 3 young children, one of whom is a cancer survivor. As a diversity educator, Liza leads corporate and educational trainings around inclusion. She also develops safe space workshops for the LGBTQ community. She defines herself as a "mama on the road to a doctorate; a singer, writer; cancer warrior; rockstar; runner; and best of all, a tempered radical. She is the recipient of the 2015 Peer Leader Award at the AppreciASIANS Gala on April 30, 2015. Learn more.
