Are you an UPSTREAMIST?
Dear AWFH members and supporters,
At our last meeting, Selena Tan, VP of our board, played the following TED talk video and challenged us to be Upstreamists--people who go beyond providing direct services and tackle the root causes of health disparities. At AWFH, we aspire to help others take charge of their health, which begins where we live, work, and play.

There is a global movement to empower community members to seek
and provide solutions within themselves. In its 2002 report, Unequal Treatment: Confronting Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health Care, the Institute of Medicine recognized that Community Health Workers "offer promise as a community-based resource to increase racial and ethnic minorities' access to health care and to serve as a liaison between healthcare providers and the communities they serve."
We will be honoring those who are contributing great work towards Asian Women's health at the 2015 AppreciASIANS Award Gala on April 30. In addition, we'll explore the impact of community-based care at our 3rd State of Asian Women's Health in MA Conference on May 14 at Impact Hub Boston.
Are you ready to swim upstream and join the movement?  If so, check out the events below and volunteer with AWFH!

3/14: Congratulations to
Miss Pink Congeniality 2015, Chien-Chi Huang!
From L to R: Michele Dube (Miss Pink 2015), Chien-Chi Huang (Miss Pink Congeniality), Kelly Philbin (Miss Pink Runner-Up)
On March 14, 2015 there were eight beautiful women who graced the stage at the Miss Pink Pageant held at Danversport Yacht Club. These women were all breast cancer survivors known as Pink Warriors who were from all over the New England area competing for a cause and fighting for a cure. This annual event is the main fundraising gala for this local non-profit organization that helps support breast cancer patients and their families.

Our Pink Warriors gather in the day to be pampered with mani/pedi's, massages, a makeover, and more. Then each woman walks the runway and shares her testimony with breast cancer and how it has impacted their lives and the lives around them. They provide a message of truth and hope and are always helping raise awareness in the community.

Every year a Miss Pink Congeniality is chosen. Miss Pink Congeniality is someone who showcases a team-orientated mentality and one who empowers those around her through her friendship. This year Chien-Chi Huang was selected as our Miss Pink Congeniality 2015! Michele Dube was selected as Miss Pink 2015 with Kelley Philbin as her runner-up. Meet... Tulika Singh!
A member since January 2015, Tulika has supported the efforts of the communications and recruitment teams, and contributed to the early phases of planning for the upcoming AppreciASIANS event. She is college graduate from the University of Wisconsin - Madison, and has taken this year to serve with AmeriCorps, addressing the educational disparities faced by low-income neighborhoods in Roxbury. Although Tulika is brimming with ideas, she is currently stepping back to take care of other obligations and hopes to rejoin AWFH team. Tulika's dream for AWFH is that in 3-5 years it becomes a force for addressing Asian women's health disparities on variousl levels, integrating with the healthcare system to support patients and spread health knowledge in the greater Boston area and beyond.Learn more here.
