    President's Message

Our Chamber is served by volunteer business people who freely give their time, skills and knowledge to support the business community. The Chamber Board of Directors offers a firm base of experience and commercial success across a broad range of sectors. Members benefit from the advice and guidance of specialists with an understanding of the challenges and opportunities for local businesses.

To start the year off, the board of the Twinsburg Chamber of Commerce held its first retreat to review and plan for 2017 and to set the platform for the strategic plan process in 2018. The board reviewed several areas of the Chamber’s existence, purpose and goals for 2017.  Our agenda included an opportunity for new and standing board members to get to know each other away from the boardroom, which provided a relaxed atmosphere to get the business at hand done.

We are happy to report that we currently have approximately 265 active members, which represents nearly half of all of the businesses in the Twinsburg area.  Membership revenue increased by 23% over 2016.

Some of the topics of discussion included our partnership with the Twinsburg City Schools in the development of its new initiative, Twinsburg Academy, officially launching in the fall of 2017.  We are very pleased and excited to be a part of this wonderful opportunity to provide alternative career pathways for students in the district.

Through the efforts of the Scholarship Committee, plans for a reverse raffle to debut in 2018 is in its early planning stages.  This will be a new event and a great addition to the funds we raise during our luncheons and other special events.

All in all, the retreat proved to be an invaluable opportunity to take a closer look at how the board operates and conducts itself. Time was spent reviewing communication efforts taken through social media, what events have worked well, and how the board can continue to serve the membership.

The Twinsburg Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors prides itself on the active role it plays. It understands that the continued success of the Chamber relies on a board that is committed to growth and new ideas.

Sincerely,

Allison J. Chance

Messy: The Power of Disorder to Transform Our Lives by Tim Harford

Tim Harford’s late 2016 release discusses how being messy can surprisingly benefit our personal and professional lives.  He provides a unique perspective on how our inclinations to be neat and tidy can limit our creativity, responsiveness, and resilience.  In his introduction, he asserts that messiness is not the answer to all of life’s problems, but that it has “too few defenders” and there can sometimes be a “certain magic in the mess”. He frames this argument in multiple contexts but focuses particularly on its relevance to our careers.

He introduces us to the exact and minimalist aesthetic of Steve Jobs and the use of the “5s Management System (sort, straighten, shine, standardize, and sustain) as prime examples of how disorder is universally discouraged in the workforce.  However, he presents examples where sheer tidiness can feel oppressive and reduce our productivity.  In one study, when participants disliked their space they also disliked their coworkers, their employers, and the work they were doing.  Conversely, participants accomplished much more when they were able to rearrange the decorations provided to them and control the space they were in.

This example just scratches the surface of his study.  However, an over-arching theme from Messy is we should be able to work in a way that best suits us.  Whether you compulsively align your pens and notebook at a meeting or scatter papers in an attempt to make sense of a project, you should be encouraged to work in a way that will boost your productivity and make you feel inspired.

As professionals, we always seek ways to build our skills and improve ourselves.  However, it is refreshing to gain insight into how our supposed weaknesses like messiness can be used to our advantage.  If you are seeking to embrace and thrive in the disorder of any aspect of your life, this is the perfect book for you.

Reduce Your Energy Usage and Your Operating Expenses
COSE has teamed with FirstEnergy’s Ohio Utilities to provide member businesses with an exclusive energy savings opportunity. The first step is a comprehensive assessment of how your facility uses power; gas, electric, even steam. The best part? There’s no out of pocket expense! Read what Craig Wallace, CEO of PACE Engineering, Inc., learned from his energy audit with the COSE Energy Advisors.

"Every firm looks to lower their operating costs.  Pace Engineering took advantage of the energy audit that COSE offered.  Energy accounts for 4% of our costs from process gas and electricity used in our manufacturing to general uses heat and lighting. Most people view energy costs as fixed.  The energy audit identified a number of projects that when implemented will reduce our energy costs more than 9%.   We were surprised because five years ago, we spent more than $250,000 on energy efficiency projects.  From the COSE audit, we learned where our energy is consumed and have uncovered even more savings than were identified in the audit." - Craig Wallace, CEO PACE Engineering, Inc.
