Implementing Business Excellence within an organisation requires a significant ongoing effort on the part of all members throughout an organisation. Business Excellence is not an end in itself, but a means to develop the organisation.

One of the key strategic goals of the Foundation is to “Advocate for holistic Organisational Excellence criteria/ approaches that drive self-confidence, customer focused high performance, improvements & results”. This in itself is a big, hairy and audacious goal but it is one that the foundation is committed too.

While the Foundation is there to help; as the old adage says, you can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make it drink. We want to reach out and work with our members but we also need our members and the wider business community to reach out the Foundation. We have a number of resources and can assist you via networking, training and professional advice. If you believe that your Business Excellence programme is at an impasse, please do contact us and we will do the utmost to assist.

Collectively if we work to champion performance excellence - we can all go away knowing that we have done our best to contribute to NZ inc

Benchmarking Opportunity

One of our Members is keen to work with others on comparing data relating to project management performance and how effective their processes are.  The organisation is a large public sector institution and is keen to connect with others of either like ilk or a similar size.

Obviously this would have benefits for all involved and it is this sharing of information which makes us a real community of excellence.  If you are interested in discussing this more please contact me in the first instance.

Evaluator Training:  19 – 20 May Auckland

Each  year we train a team of Evaluators who are charged with assessing one of our Awards applications.  This year the training is scheduled for 19-20 May in Auckland at the Mercure Hotel.

The role of a quality Evaluator is essential to ensuring the robustness of the evaluation process and that Applicants go through a rigorous and thorough review.   As importantly Applicants need to receive a feedback report which comprehensively identifies their Strengths but also their Opportunities for Improvement.  It is these OFIs that become the roadmap for improvement over the coming years.  Our Evaluator training is targeted at ensuring attendees comprehensively understand the Baldrige Criteria and its application, but also what they need to see in an organisation to score it leading to either a Bronze, Silver or Gold Award.

This year we are very pleased to have a qualified and competent team of Evaluators to train – many of whom are returning Evaluators and Team Leaders.

There is also an opportunity for a small number to attend this training - without needing to go onto becoming an Evaluator.  The benefits of this are numerous:

For the individual:
  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of the Baldrige framework and its application
  • Understand how the Evaluation process works and what the Evaluators are looking for
  • Take that knowledge back to your organisation and understand how to apply
  • Gain experience in preparing an application which can be directly applied to your own organisation
  • Understand the need to “Prove It”, not just “Set It”
  • Learn new skills

For the organisation:
  • Use it as a stepping stone towards Award application
  • Gain a "champion" within the organisation who can understand and lead the business excellence programme
  • Support employee development and progression
  • Create buy-in within the team through increased comprehension of the framework
The cost of attending this training for Members is $2,500 plus GST, Non Members $3,250 plus GST.  This includes two days training, accommodation on Monday and Tuesday nights (if required), and dinner on Tuesday.    All travel costs and incidentals must be met by the attendee.

If you are interested in attending this training, please contact Fiona Gavriel direct on the following.  Please note places are strictly limited.

Christchurch is a go! Business Excellence Foundation Course

You wanted it, you have got it!!! and it is in a new format.................

July 7 - Day 1 The first day covers an introduction to Business Excellence, the Core Concepts and Values, and the framework on which it is based. During the day we explore the definitions which are used and will cover some aspects of leadership, customer and workforce engagement, and strategy

July 8 - Day 2 Further work will be done to build on the topics covered in Day 1. We cover the development and implementation of strategy. How measurement and analysis is used to both develop strategy and monitor progress. We will look at how we get and use customer feedback, key elements of organisational performance improvement, and the organisations work processes.

July 29 - Day 3 We continue to cover the topics which include governance and societal responsibility, knowledge management, information and information technology, operational effectiveness and the workforce.

July 30 - Day 4 The final day brings together all of the above by looking at how we measure the success of all aspects of an organisation, and be able to say “how well have we done”. We will look at a complete application and learn the basics of how to review an organisations performance.

The approach to the course is to look at the materials available to us and then explore the concepts by completing exercises in work groups. The focus is on learning the theory and applying it to real life examples drawn from the participants own knowledge and experience.

Members:                $2,750.00 + GST
Non members:        $4,000.00 + GST

Time for some strategic thinking

Statistics New Zealand has launched a new section on its website aimed at helping business find information about their competitors and target markets.

The small business toolbox gives people access to information that was largely already available on the Statistics NZ website but was often difficult to find.

People wanting to start, grow a business or analyses their current position can look for financial details of the industry in their area or use it to pinpoint which locations might be fertile ground for a business. Click here to view the site and happy planning!
