Online Centres Network News
Thursday 21 March 2019

Hello <<First Name>>

Next week, 25 - 31 March will see community organisations and national partners from across Europe come together to celebrate All Digital Week - and you can get involved.

Much like our own Get Online Week, All Digital Week is an annual digital empowerment campaign that sees events held at community centres, libraries, schools and not-for-profits across Europe.

Good Things Foundation is getting behind the campaign and we’d love to see the Online Centres Network representing themselves as a world-leader in supporting people with digital. This year more than one organisation can register as a partner.

Here are just a few ways your centre could get involved:

  • Add any digital skills activity you’re holding next week to the map of events - even if it’s just your regular class.
  • Browse through the list of resources for inspiration - they’re collecting teaching resources from across Europe, so who knows what you might learn from those delivering digital skills in other countries.
  • You can also write public blog posts on the community website
  • Receive a personalised certificate for organising the event - all confirmed event holders will receive a certificate to say thank you for taking part.
  • Most importantly - enjoy being part of the pan-European all digital week!

I'm looking forward to seeing how you get behind All Digital Week - don't forget to tag us on Twitter @Online_Centres.

Best wishes
Helen Milner OBE

Helen Milner - ITV tackle digital exclusion on primetime tv. Last night, ITV highlighted the work thousands of organisations across the country do to help people to change their lives through digital. It made me so proud to see this work showcased right there on the television in my living room.
CATCH UP ON THE TONIGHT SHOW ON THE ITV HUB

As you may know, last week the Tonight Show put a spotlight on digital exclusion across the country. Our own Helen Milner talked about the importance of getting online and a few of our Online Centres were able to share how they are supporting people in their community.

If you were too busy channel hopping, don’t worry - it’s available on catch up via
ITV Hub.

Free digital skills training - Thursday 28 March

Are you supporting people to gain basic digital skills but would like to enhance your own? On Thursday 28 March, Smartlyte in Birmingham will be hosting a free digital skills workshop for members of the Online Centres Network. The training will provide digital skills at a more advanced level than the essential digital skills we offer through Learn My Way.

The sessions will cover:

  • How you can use innovation as a tool to come up with solutions to your problems. You’ll learn the techniques of innovation called Design Thinking, which is a process used by businesses worldwide, including Facebook, Apple and Google
  • Understand why cybersecurity is relevant to you and how you can protect yourself. Find out core methods you can use to protect yourself online
It’ll be a great opportunity for yourself or members of staff at your organisation to build digital confidence to further support others. To enhance your own digital skills or someone else's.

Good Things Happen podcast - In the very first episode of our Good Things Happen podcast, we explored the motivational barriers to getting online.

Can you support research into the motivations of getting online?

Would one of your learners be happy to speak to a researcher about the benefits of getting online? Researchers from the University of Sheffield aim to further understand how digital training courses can improve the lives of older people.

If one of your learners would be interested in speaking to one of the friendly research team - complete this short expression of interest form.
